Miniature light guides

The current requirement profiles for technical devices and electronic modules speak for themselves. New products will have to become smaller and smaller. At the same time, more and more functions will have to be made possible in a very small space. This trend is apparent in almost every branch of electronics: Automotive, communication and consumer electronics are just three examples. The reasons for continuing miniaturisation are clear, since smaller devices bring many benefits: Less weight and a more compact design makes them easier and cheaper to store and to send. They are easier to handle in use and offer greater functionality. These are advantages that have positive effects on both the cost and the benefit sides of a product. Smaller components offer many possibilities to make a product better and reduce the cost over its lifecycle.
Expertise, quality and precision
One condition for taking advantage of these benefits is the availability of appropriately small electronic, mechanical and opto-electronic components. Their development and production demands a very high degree of expertise, quality and precision. Because despite scaling the dimensions and high functional density, miniaturised solutions must meet the same requirements as their larger predecessors – and at acceptable cost as well. Raw materials and semi-finished products must be of particularly high quality, because even the tiniest impurity or unevenness in the material can have far more serious effects than in the past.

The requirements for precision in manufacturing are increasing out of all proportion. As a specialist for innovative, future-proof solutions, MENTOR develops and produces miniaturised solutions of the highest precision and quality. These solutions help our customers to use state-of-the-art technology even within very confined spaces.

As a leading manufacturer in the field of light guide technology, MENTOR offers for grid measurements of 2.54 mm an extensive portfolio of more than 150 miniature light guides with round, square or rectangular radiating surfaces for front panel and circuit board assembly.

Miniature light guides in 2.54 grid

The 2.54 mm grid of the miniature light guides enables twice as many display elements to be brought together on the same printed circuit board area as would be possible with conventional options in a 5.08 mm grid. This offers constructors a wide variety of new design possibilities, above all in very confined assembly spaces.
Custom light guide solutions

In customised projects too, the space available often presents a special challenge. Here also, our development engineers are finding appropriate special solutions. One example is the only one millimetre thick light guide for an under-sink appliance. More about custom light guide solutions.
Square light guides – miniaturised

The horizontal square light guides are available as single and triple-row versions, both with miniaturised beam surfaces of 1.4 x 1.4 mm. The spectrum of options that can be supplied ranges from the single light guide to the multiple light guide with 30 light areas. More about square light guides.
